About

If you owned or leased certain Toyota vehicles between 2011 and 2019, you may be eligible for cash payments or reimbursements from a $78.5 million class action settlement — but proof is required to file.

The lawsuit claims that defective Airbag Control Units (ACUs) in several Toyota models could malfunction due to electrical overstress, potentially causing airbags or other safety systems to fail during a crash. The lawsuit claimed that Toyota knowingly sold vehicles with defective ACUs — the electrical components that control airbag deployment — putting drivers at risk. Plaintiffs say airbags may fail to deploy in a crash due to these defects. The settlement resolves these claims without Toyota admitting liability.

This settlement includes reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses, residual cash payments, warranty extensions, and more.

Products Covered by the Settlement

This settlement covers a range of Toyota vehicles sold or leased between 2011 and 2019 that may contain defective ACUs.

Specifically, it includes the Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Avalon, Avalon HV, Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia, as listed above. The claim applies to vehicles with ACUs that are part of the recall due to the risk of airbag failure or improper deployment in a crash.

How Much Can You Receive?

The amount you can receive depends on your eligibility and documentation:

  • Reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses related to the airbag recall, including:

    • Rental car or towing expenses

    • Childcare costs

    • Lost wages for time off work

    • Travel costs to and from the Toyota dealership

    • Unreimbursed repair costs related to the ACU

  • Residual cash payment: If funds remain after reimbursements, eligible claimants may receive up to $250 as an equal payout.

  • Additional benefits include:

    • A 12-year extended warranty for any new parts installed during the recall

    • Free vehicle inspections for cars involved in frontal collisions with airbag or seat belt failures
