What happened
On June 5, 2026, American Addiction Centers, a Tennessee-based substance abuse treatment provider, detected suspicious activity in its Salesforce customer relationship management environment and launched an investigation with incident response support. The company reports that on May 12, 2026, an unauthorized actor accessed and extracted data from that Salesforce environment, and that by June 8, 2026 it had confirmed the scope of the data acquired. According to the company, the activity was limited to the Salesforce instance and did not involve its core networks or electronic health record systems.
American Addiction Centers reported the incident to the California Attorney General on August 7, 2026 and began issuing notification letters to affected individuals. The notice states that the information involved varied by individual and may have included name, contact information such as address, phone number and email address, Social Security number, and a brief health description provided during initial outreach to the company. Impacted individuals are being offered a complimentary membership to Privacy Solutions ID, provided by Epiq, with enrollment instructions and an activation code included in the mailed letter. The total number of people affected has not been disclosed in the public filing.
Because the reported data set combines Social Security numbers with information indicating that a person contacted a substance abuse treatment provider, the sensitivity of the exposure is high. Whether American Addiction Centers maintained reasonable safeguards for that information in its Salesforce platform, and whether the roughly two month gap between discovery and notification caused additional harm, are among the issues being evaluated.
