What is going on
How a stranger ends up on your policy
Insurers buy household and vehicle data from third-party vendors such as LexisNexis Risk Solutions and Verisk. Those vendors flag people they link to your address or household. Some carriers then add that person as a rated driver and raise the premium, at times without clear notice or your approval.
Data flags a person
A third-party data system associates someone with your household, correctly or not.
The carrier adds them
That person is added to your policy as a driver and your rate is recalculated.
You pay more
Your premium rises, and you may not learn why until you read the fine print.
