What happened
On August 31, 2026, American Family Connect Insurance Company (CONNECT) became aware of a technical issue at the conclusion of its online auto insurance quoting process. According to the notice letter filed with the California Attorney General, an unauthorized third party used personal information obtained from other sources to generate auto insurance quotes and, between June 30 and August 20, 2026, may have obtained driver's license numbers through that process. The company states that no internal systems, databases, or customer policy information were accessed.
American Family Connect began mailing notice letters on September 30, 2026, about one month after discovering the issue. The company reports that it engaged cybersecurity experts, resolved the vulnerability, and strengthened security controls on its quoting platform. It is offering 12 months of complimentary single-bureau credit monitoring, credit report, and credit score services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company, along with proactive fraud assistance. The total number of people affected has not been publicly disclosed. Why the quoting tool returned driver's license data to an unauthorized user, and why the activity continued for about seven weeks before it was detected, are among the issues being evaluated.
Driver's license numbers are a common target for fraudsters because they can be used to open financial accounts, file fraudulent unemployment or insurance claims, and pass identity verification checks. Because the third party reportedly already held other personal information, a stolen license number may be combined with that data to impersonate affected individuals.
