Background

What happened

Challenge Mfg. Company, LLC ("Challenge Mfg"), a Michigan-based automotive manufacturer, experienced a data security incident that resulted in unauthorized access to certain files containing sensitive personal information. Upon discovering the incident, the company conducted an investigation and began notifying affected individuals on or around June 1, 2026.

According to the company's disclosures, all affected individuals had their Social Security numbers exposed, and for some Texas residents the exposed data also included names and medical information. Challenge Mfg reported the incident to the Texas Attorney General on June 26, 2026 and to the Massachusetts Attorney General on June 28, 2026, and stated that 1,668 individuals were affected, 1,661 in Texas and 7 in Massachusetts. The company is offering 24 months of complimentary identity-protection services through IDX.

The exposure of Social Security numbers creates a lasting risk of identity theft and financial fraud, and the Texas residents whose medical information was involved face an added risk of medical identity theft. Whether Challenge Mfg's data security practices met legal standards, and the full cause and scope of the incident, are among the issues being evaluated.

What to do if you received a letter

1

Keep your notice letter

Do not discard it. Your letter contains the IDX enrollment code and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.

2

Enroll in the free 24-month IDX identity protection

Enroll in the IDX identity-protection services offered in your letter before the September 1, 2026 deadline. IDX coverage includes credit and dark-web monitoring, up to $1 million in identity-fraud reimbursement, and fully managed recovery support. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.

3

Place a fraud alert or credit freeze

Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide.
