Background

What happened in the Eastern Bank data breach

Eastern Bank sent letters dated September 30, 2026 to holders of Eastern Bank Debit MasterCard cards, including Debit MasterCard BusinessCard cards. The letter says a merchant where the cardholder used the card "may have experienced a breach in security." Eastern Bank states that it is "unable to provide any additional details because they have not been provided to us," and the letter does not name the merchant or say when the merchant breach happened.

The Massachusetts filing lists credit/debit card numbers as the data involved. The Massachusetts filing reported on October 13, 2026, which includes the posted letter, lists 51 Massachusetts residents; an earlier Massachusetts entry dated September 30, 2026 listed 25. The letter comes in two versions. One says Eastern Bank does not currently feel there is a need to issue a new card. The other says Eastern Bank is lowering the limit on the current card to $500 and mailing a new debit card that must be activated before a date shown in the letter. Neither version offers credit monitoring, and both ask cardholders to monitor their accounts closely.

How cardholders' credit/debit card numbers were protected, and what harm cardholders may face as a result, are among the issues being evaluated.

What to do if you got an Eastern Bank data breach letter

1

Keep your notice letter

Do not discard it. It explains which Eastern Bank debit card was involved and what the bank is doing about it, and it is important evidence if you decide to take part in a lawsuit.

2

Follow the card instructions in your letter

If your letter says Eastern Bank is mailing you a new debit card, activate it before the date in your letter, destroy the old card, and give any billers with automatic payments your new card information. Monitor your accounts closely and contact Eastern Bank at 1-800-EASTERN (327-8376) if you see suspicious activity. Following these steps does not waive your right to pursue legal action.

3

Place a fraud alert or credit freeze

Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide.
