What happened
According to a notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General on July 14, 2026, Fall River Municipal Credit Union ("FRMCU"), a Fall River, Massachusetts member-owned credit union founded in 1930 and headquartered at 333 Milliken Boulevard, received a fraud-control alert from Visa indicating that an unauthorized actor had accessed a third-party processing data center. The compromised processor handled transactions made with FRMCU Visa debit cards at retailers, point-of-sale terminals, and ATMs. FRMCU states that it determined the incident affected one of its cardholders and immediately began remediation.
FRMCU sent notice to the affected member on or around July 14, 2026, and reported the incident to the Massachusetts Attorney General the same day. The credit union's filing lists one impacted Massachusetts resident. According to the notice, the information involved was Visa debit-card information associated with the affected member, and no confirmation of misuse of personal information was reported at the time of the notice. FRMCU ordered a new debit-card number for the member and scheduled permanent deactivation of the old card on August 14, 2026. The credit union did not offer complimentary credit monitoring, and instead directed the member to its Account Services Department for assistance.
Because payment-card information can be used to make unauthorized purchases and to attempt further fraud, cardholders whose Visa debit-card details were involved should review their account statements and online banking closely for transactions they do not recognize. Whether FRMCU's and its third-party processor's data security practices met the standards expected of a federally insured financial institution, and whether any additional cardholders may ultimately be identified, are among the issues being evaluated.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter documents the incident and the replacement-card instructions, and it is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Activate your replacement card and monitor your account
FRMCU did not offer credit monitoring in this notice. Activate the replacement Visa debit card as soon as it arrives, update any recurring payments with the new card number, and review your account statements and online banking regularly for unauthorized transactions. Report anything you do not recognize to FRMCU Account Services at 508-678-9028 ext. 8699. Taking these steps does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
