What happened
Greenwood County Hospital disclosed that between December 2 and December 18, 2025, a network security incident at its third-party vendor, Aesto, LLC, allowed an unauthorized actor to access a limited portion of Aesto's Amazon Web Services cloud infrastructure containing Greenwood County Hospital patient information. The activity was detected on December 18, 2025, and Aesto engaged external cybersecurity professionals to investigate and to determine what data was affected. Notice of the incident was filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office and letters were mailed to affected individuals dated August 19, 2026.
The notice states that the review confirming which individuals and which data elements were involved was completed on May 26, 2026, roughly five months after the activity was detected, and that letters did not go out until August 19, 2026, approximately eight months after detection. The categories of personal information reported as involved are full name and Social Security number. Greenwood County Hospital is offering affected individuals 24 months of complimentary single-bureau credit monitoring, credit reports, and credit scores, plus fraud assistance services, through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. Recipients must enroll within 90 days of the date of their letter using the activation code printed in the notice.
A Social Security number paired with a full name is among the most damaging combinations to lose, because it is the core data set used to open new credit accounts, file fraudulent tax returns, and claim government benefits in another person's name. Unlike a payment card, a Social Security number cannot be reissued on request, so the risk does not expire when the free monitoring period ends. Healthcare providers and the vendors they hire also carry obligations under HIPAA and state data security laws to safeguard patient information and to give timely notice when it is compromised. Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter contains the enrollment code for credit monitoring and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Enroll in the free 24-month credit monitoring
Enroll in the Cyberscout (single bureau) monitoring offered in your letter within 90 days of the date on the notice, using the activation code provided. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because a Social Security number was reported as involved, also consider requesting an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS and watching for unfamiliar accounts on all three credit reports, not only the single bureau covered by the free monitoring.
