Background

What happened in the Greystar data breach

According to the sample notice letter Greystar filed with the Washington Attorney General, between May 1, 2026 and May 18, 2026, an unauthorized third party accessed a Greystar employee email account and acquired certain files stored in that account. The letter says that after identifying the unauthorized activity, Greystar contained the access, began an investigation with outside cybersecurity specialists, took steps to secure its environment, and notified law enforcement. Greystar also reviewed the acquired files to determine the types of information they contained.

Greystar's first notice letters are dated August 27, 2026, the same day its notice was filed with the Washington Attorney General, and the Indiana Attorney General lists August 27, 2026 as the date notifications were sent. In an October 1, 2026 update to the Washington Attorney General, Greystar's counsel wrote that the initial notice covered 333 Washington residents and that, following additional address validation, Greystar would provide written notice to an additional 572 Washington residents on October 1, 2026. The Washington filing lists 905 Washington residents, and Greystar reported 1,831 affected individuals to the Indiana Attorney General, including 1 Indiana resident.

The Washington sample letter says the acquired files contained the recipient's name in combination with another category of information, which appears only as a placeholder, [Extra2], in the posted sample. Greystar's Washington filing lists name, Social Security number, driver's license or Washington ID card number, financial and banking information, full date of birth, and other information. Greystar is offering twenty-four months of complimentary Experian IdentityWorks credit monitoring and identity restoration services. Whether Greystar's security practices met legal standards, and the more than three months between the end of the unauthorized access and the first letters, are among the issues being evaluated.
