What happened
According to a notice filed with the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General, HSBC Bank mistakenly emailed documentation pertaining to customer accounts to an unintended recipient on August 18, 2026. The company reports that it identified the error on August 19, 2026, asked the recipient to delete the message, and obtained written confirmation that the email and its attachments had been deleted.
HSBC Bank mailed notice letters to affected individuals on September 2, 2026 and filed the notice with the Massachusetts Attorney General the same month. The filing reflects 2 affected individuals. The company states that the information involved included Social Security numbers, personal telephone numbers, personal email addresses, and a limited account identifier consisting of the last four digits of an account number. HSBC Bank is offering a complimentary 24-month membership in Identity Defense Total, which includes dark web monitoring, high-risk transaction monitoring, 3-bureau credit monitoring with a monthly credit score, identity-theft insurance of up to $1 million, security-freeze capability, and dedicated victim assistance.
A misdirected email involving Social Security numbers is treated seriously under state breach notification laws even when the recipient confirms deletion, because the firm has no independent way to verify that the file was not copied, forwarded, or retained before deletion. Whether HSBC Bank maintained adequate safeguards against misdirected transmissions of sensitive customer records, including recipient verification and outbound data-loss controls, and whether affected customers face continuing identity-theft exposure, are among the issues under review.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter contains the activation code for the free Identity Defense Total membership and documents that your information was involved, which is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Enroll in the free 24-month Identity Defense Total membership
Enroll using the activation code in your letter as soon as you receive it. The membership includes dark web monitoring, high-risk transaction monitoring, 3-bureau credit monitoring, and up to $1 million in identity-theft insurance. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because a Social Security number was involved, consider placing a fraud alert or a free security freeze with Experian (888-397-3742), Equifax (800-525-6285), and TransUnion (800-680-7289), and review your free credit reports periodically over the next 12 to 24 months.
