Background

What happened

On August 31, 2025, Jaguar Land Rover Limited ("JLR"), a British multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Coventry, England, responded to a cybersecurity incident in which an unauthorized actor accessed certain JLR systems. As part of its response, JLR proactively shut down portions of its systems as a precaution and engaged third-party cybersecurity experts, working alongside the UK Government's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and law enforcement to investigate.

JLR later determined that the unauthorized actor accessed personal data processed in connection with employment, including information used to administer payroll, benefits, and staff schemes for employees and their dependents. JLR completed its review and began mailing notification letters on or around July 23, 2026, roughly eleven months after the incident was first detected. According to the notice, the affected data may include one or more of the following: Social Security number, non-US national ID number, passport number, driver's license number, and health insurance number. JLR is offering 24 months of single-bureau credit monitoring through Cyberscout (TransUnion).

Because the exposed elements can include government identifiers such as Social Security numbers, passport numbers, and driver's license numbers, affected employees and dependents may face an elevated risk of identity theft and fraud. JLR's notice states that it was not delayed as a result of a law enforcement investigation. Whether the company's data security practices met legal standards, and whether the extended notification timeline caused additional harm, are among the issues being evaluated.

FAQ

Common questions

I received a data breach letter from Jaguar Land Rover. What should I do? +

Keep your letter, enroll in the free 24-month Cyberscout (TransUnion) credit monitoring within 90 days of the notice date, and consider placing a fraud alert or a security freeze on your credit file. Because Social Security numbers, passport numbers, and driver's license numbers may have been involved, watch for identity theft and unfamiliar activity on your accounts and health-insurance statements. You can also contact a data breach attorney for a free consultation. Accepting credit monitoring does not waive your right to sue.

Am I eligible to join a class action against Jaguar Land Rover? +

If you received a July 2026 breach notice from Jaguar Land Rover as a current or former employee or a dependent, you are likely eligible for a free case evaluation. Eligibility depends on your state of residence, the categories of your data that were exposed, and any losses you have suffered. Dapeer Law will review your notice at no cost.

How much money could I receive from a class action lawsuit? +

Data breach class action recoveries vary significantly. Settlements typically range from a few hundred dollars for basic out-of-pocket losses to several thousand dollars for documented identity theft, with class size, damages, and negotiation all affecting the final amount. No payout is guaranteed, and this investigation has not yet resulted in a settlement.

What personal information was exposed in the breach? +

JLR's notice states that the affected data may include one or more of the following: Social Security number, non-US national ID number, passport number, driver's license number, and health insurance number. The exact elements vary by individual, so your own letter should specify the categories of your data that were involved.

Did Jaguar Land Rover offer free credit monitoring? +

Yes. JLR is providing 24 months of complimentary single-bureau credit monitoring, credit report, credit score, and proactive fraud assistance through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. You must enroll within 90 days of the notice date. Enrollment is separate from, and does not waive, your right to pursue a claim.

How many people were affected by the Jaguar Land Rover breach? +

The Massachusetts Attorney General filing lists 2 Massachusetts residents as impacted, and no additional state counts have been reported. JLR employs roughly 33,000 people worldwide, so the total number of affected employees and dependents across all locations has not been publicly disclosed. This page will be updated as additional information becomes available.

Is there a deadline to take legal action? +

Yes. Statutes of limitations for data breach claims vary by state and legal theory, typically ranging from one to six years. Waiting can permanently bar your claim. Contact us as soon as possible for a free evaluation.
