What happened
On November 1, 2025, Maine Course Hospitality Group ("Maine Course Hospitality Group" or "MCHG"), a Freeport, Maine based hotel management and hospitality company, discovered suspicious activity on its computer systems. The company engaged a third-party digital forensics firm, which confirmed that an unauthorized actor accessed certain files containing personal information. Maine Course Hospitality Group says it secured the environment, notified law enforcement, and is enhancing its security controls and phishing awareness training.
Maine Course Hospitality Group mailed written notification letters on July 31, 2026, roughly nine months after the suspicious activity was first discovered, and reported the incident to the Massachusetts Attorney General on August 28, 2026. According to the notice, the files involved contained individuals' names and Social Security numbers. The Massachusetts filing lists 11 Massachusetts residents as affected. The total number of individuals notified nationwide has not been publicly disclosed. Affected individuals are being offered 24 months of single-bureau credit monitoring, a credit report, and a credit score through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company, along with proactive fraud assistance.
The company states that it has no evidence of fraud or misuse of the affected information at this time. Because Social Security numbers were reported as involved, the exposure carries a long-term risk of identity theft, tax refund fraud, and fraudulent credit applications, since a Social Security number cannot be changed the way a password or an account number can. The roughly nine month gap between discovery and notification is among the issues being evaluated, along with whether the company's pre-breach data security practices met applicable legal standards and whether the categories of information it retained were reasonably safeguarded.

Keep your notice letter

Activate the services at bfs.cyberscout.com/activate using the unique enrollment code printed in your letter. Enrollment must be completed within 90 days of the letter date, which for letters mailed on July 31, 2026 falls in late October 2026. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because Social Security numbers were reported as involved, also watch for tax filings you did not submit and for new credit accounts opened in your name, and consider requesting an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS.
