What happened
On April 30, 2026, Morning Star Tours, a Texas-based faith-based travel and tour operator headquartered in Dallas, Texas, learned that infrastructure managed by a third-party technology provider had been compromised. The company states that it contained the incident, engaged independent forensic specialists, and notified law-enforcement authorities. The forensic investigation determined that the unauthorized activity took place during a one-week window between April 24 and April 30, 2026.
Morning Star Tours filed notice of the incident with the California Attorney General on May 31, 2026 and began mailing notification letters to affected customers on June 1, 2026. According to the company's filing with the Texas Attorney General, the data that may have been exposed includes name, Social Security number, date of birth, and a government-issued identification number such as a passport or state ID card. That same filing reports that 8,651 Texas residents were affected; a nationwide total has not been released. The company states that it has found no evidence of fraud or identity theft stemming from the event and that no payment-card information appears to have been involved. It is offering complimentary IDX identity-theft protection services, which include credit and CyberScan monitoring, a $1 million insurance reimbursement policy, and identity-recovery assistance.
Because the exposed data is reported to include Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and government-issued ID numbers, affected individuals may face an elevated and long-term risk of identity theft and financial fraud, even though the company reports no confirmed misuse to date. Whether Morning Star Tours and its third-party provider maintained reasonable data security practices before the incident, and whether the categories of exposed data create lasting risk for those affected, are among the issues being evaluated.
