Received a September 2026 breach notice from Mountain Laurel Medical Center?

What happened
Mountain Laurel Medical Center ("MLMC") was notified by Aesto, LLC, a third-party service provider, that an unauthorized actor copied a limited amount of protected health information stored on Aesto's Amazon Web Services infrastructure. According to the notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General, the copying took place between December 2 and December 18, 2025. Aesto engaged outside cybersecurity professionals to investigate and review the affected files, and the unauthorized copying was confirmed on May 26, 2026.
MLMC began mailing notification letters on or around September 1, 2026, roughly nine months after the copying occurred and about three months after it was confirmed. The notice reports that the information involved may have included full name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, hospital unit or physician name, medical record number, and other medical information. MLMC states there is no evidence of misuse and is offering 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. Fourteen individuals were reported to the Massachusetts Attorney General.
Because the records at issue are healthcare records, the combination of Social Security numbers with medical record numbers and treatment details carries a higher risk of both financial identity theft and medical identity theft than a typical breach. Whether MLMC and its vendor maintained reasonable safeguards for protected health information, whether the vendor arrangement met HIPAA business associate requirements, and whether the notification delay caused additional harm are among the issues being evaluated.
