Background

What happened in the Park Dental data breach

On July 22, 2026, Park Dental, a Roanoke, Virginia dental practice, discovered unauthorized remote access to a workstation and associated office email account. According to Park Dental's notice, the access occurred intermittently between approximately June 10 and July 22, 2026. A letter from Park Dental's attorneys to the New Hampshire Attorney General states that Park Dental became aware of the access when a ransom note appeared on an employee's computer claiming the threat actor had downloaded all Park Dental files, and that Park Dental removed the threat actor from the network on July 22, 2026.

The notice says the affected environment included information maintained in office email and possibly the patient record and practice-management system. The notice filed with the New Hampshire Attorney General states that the information that may have been involved included patients' names and one or more of the following: mailing address, telephone number, email address, date of birth, patient chart or record number, appointment dates and times, treating provider, referral information, dental X-rays and related imaging, diagnosis, treatment plans and related notes, and insurance and billing information. Park Dental states that its forensic reports found no indication that protected health information or other personally identifiable information were exfiltrated, while the attorneys' letter says limited telemetry data kept Park Dental and its forensic firm from determining the scope of data accessed.

Park Dental says it changed passwords and access privileges for affected accounts. The letter states that Park Dental also notified the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights, and the Virginia Attorney General's Office. The letter does not offer credit monitoring paid for by Park Dental. Whether the practice's safeguards for patient health information met legal standards is among the issues being evaluated.
