What happened
On August 20, 2026, Post Holdings, Inc. ("Post Holdings") detected unauthorized access to its network environment. The company retained external cybersecurity specialists to secure its systems and investigate, and the forensic investigation confirmed that certain files may have been accessed without authorization. By September 11, 2026, Post Holdings determined that personal information relating to specific individuals was involved.
After completing a detailed review to identify affected individuals, Post Holdings began mailing notice letters on October 7, 2026, roughly seven weeks after the intrusion was detected, and reported the incident to the Idaho Attorney General on October 8, 2026. According to the notice, the affected information includes first and last names and driver's license numbers. Post Holdings is offering 12 months of free credit monitoring and identity-theft protection through CyberScout, a TransUnion company. The total number of affected individuals has not been publicly disclosed.
Driver's license numbers paired with names can be used to open fraudulent accounts, file false insurance or unemployment claims, and support synthetic identity fraud. Whether Post Holdings' pre-breach security practices met the standards required under applicable state and federal law, including its password and multi-factor authentication controls before the incident, is among the issues being evaluated.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter contains the enrollment code for CyberScout credit monitoring and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Enroll in the free 12-month credit monitoring
Enroll in the CyberScout (TransUnion) credit monitoring and identity-theft protection offered in your letter before the stated deadline. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide.
Because driver's license numbers were involved, consider placing a free fraud alert or security freeze with each of the three major credit bureaus and contacting your state motor vehicle agency if you notice signs that your license number is being misused.
