What happened
On May 14, 2026, Schembre & Gannon, LLC, a certified public accounting firm based in Fanwood, New Jersey, detected unusual activity within its computer network. The firm engaged outside cyber forensic specialists and legal counsel to investigate. That investigation determined that an unauthorized individual had accessed the network and may have viewed and copied certain files containing personal information.
Schembre & Gannon completed its review of the affected data on July 8, 2026 and began mailing notification letters on July 30, 2026, roughly 77 days after the incident was detected. The filing submitted to the Massachusetts Attorney General reports that 8 Massachusetts residents were affected and identifies Social Security numbers among the information involved. The firm is offering 12 months of single bureau credit monitoring, credit reports, credit scores, and fraud assistance services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company.
Accounting firms hold some of the most sensitive records a person generates, including Social Security numbers, dependents' identifying details, income and bank account information, and prior-year returns. Exposure of a Social Security number carries a long tail of risk, including fraudulent tax filings and new-account fraud, because the number cannot be changed the way a card number can. Whether the firm's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, whether the affected population extends beyond the residents reported to Massachusetts, and whether the notification timeline caused additional harm are among the issues being evaluated.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter contains the enrollment code for credit monitoring and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Enroll in the free 12-month credit monitoring
Enroll in the Cyberscout (TransUnion) monitoring offered in your letter before the stated deadline. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide.Because Social Security numbers were involved, consider placing a security freeze with all three credit bureaus rather than a fraud alert alone, and consider requesting an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS to reduce the risk of a fraudulent tax return being filed in your name.
