Background

What happened

Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP (Sheppard), an international law firm headquartered in Los Angeles, reported that on August 31, 2026 a single Sheppard attorney was targeted in a sophisticated social-engineering attack. According to the firm, the attack resulted in certain documents being disclosed to an unknown third party. Sheppard states that it discovered the incident on September 1, 2026, engaged a third-party cybersecurity forensics firm to investigate, and notified law enforcement. The firm also states that there was no unauthorized access to, or compromise of, its broader systems or network.

Sheppard reports that it then reviewed the impacted documents to determine what personal information they contained, and began mailing notice letters dated October 2, 2026, about one month after discovery. A sample of the notice was filed with the California Attorney General. The public sample letter states only that the recipient's personal information was contained in one of the files impacted in the incident and does not itemize the specific categories of data involved. Affected individuals are being offered 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company, which the firm describes as including triple-bureau credit monitoring, proactive fraud assistance, identity restoration services, and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance.

Because Sheppard is a law firm that handles documents in connection with client representations, affected individuals may have had sensitive personal, financial, or matter-related information contained in the impacted files. Whether the firm's safeguards against social engineering and its employee training met applicable legal standards, and what categories of data were actually disclosed, are among the issues being evaluated.

FAQ

Common questions

I received a data breach letter from Sheppard. What should I do? +

Keep the notice letter, enroll in the free 24-month Cyberscout (TransUnion) credit monitoring before the December 31, 2026 deadline, place a fraud alert or security freeze with the major credit bureaus, and review your credit reports and account statements for unfamiliar activity. Report any suspected identity theft to law enforcement. Contact a data breach attorney for a free consultation to understand your legal options. Accepting credit monitoring does not waive your right to pursue a legal claim.

Am I eligible to join a class action against Sheppard? +

If you received an October 2026 breach notice from Sheppard, you are likely eligible for a free case evaluation. Eligibility depends on your state of residence, the specific categories of your data that were involved, and any losses or harm you have experienced. Dapeer Law will review your notice at no cost.

How much money could I receive from a class action lawsuit? +

Data breach class action recoveries vary significantly. Settlements typically range from a few hundred dollars for basic out-of-pocket losses to several thousand dollars for documented identity theft, with class size, damages, and negotiation all affecting the final amount. No payout is guaranteed, and this investigation has not yet resulted in a settlement.

What personal information was exposed in the breach? +

The sample notice filed with the California Attorney General states only that the recipient's personal information was contained in one of the files impacted in the incident. Sheppard has not publicly specified the exact data elements. Your individual letter may identify the categories of your data that were involved.

Did Sheppard offer free credit monitoring? +

Yes. Sheppard is offering 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company, which the firm describes as including triple-bureau credit monitoring, a TransUnion credit report, proactive fraud assistance, identity restoration services, and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance. The enrollment deadline is December 31, 2026, and enrollment instructions are printed in each person's mailed notice. Enrolling does not waive your right to pursue a legal claim.
