What happened
On May 7, 2026, Shop FAN EXPO discovered unauthorized code that had been installed on the checkout page of its e-commerce website. According to the notice filed with the Maine Attorney General, the code was designed to harvest information that customers entered during the payment process. An internal investigation supported by third-party cybersecurity specialists determined that the code may have affected checkout activity occurring between June 19, 2025 and May 7, 2026, a window of roughly ten and a half months.
Immediately after the discovery, Shop FAN EXPO disabled online checkout to prevent further exposure, engaged independent forensic specialists to investigate, and began evaluating security enhancements before restoring the service. The company began mailing notification letters on or around June 5, 2026. Unlike many breach notices, this one itemizes the data that the code could have captured, which includes name, postal address, phone number, email address, payment card number, card expiration date, and card verification code (CVC). The notice does not mention any complimentary credit monitoring.
Because full payment card details, including the CVC, may have been captured during checkout, affected customers face a heightened risk of fraudulent card-not-present charges. Whether the company's pre-breach security practices for its checkout page met legal standards, and why the malicious code went undetected for roughly ten and a half months, are among the issues being evaluated.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter documents that your information was involved in the incident and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Review your payment card statements
Carefully review recent and upcoming card statements for charges you do not recognize, and report any unauthorized activity to your card issuer right away. The customer-service number is usually printed on the back of the card.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide.Because full payment card details may have been captured, asking your issuer for a replacement card number is often the most direct protective step for this type of breach.
