What happened
According to SM Energy Company ("SM Energy"), an independent oil and gas exploration and production company headquartered in Denver, Colorado, the company experienced a cybersecurity incident on or around May 15, 2026 involving unauthorized access to certain company systems. The company states that it launched an investigation, blocked the unauthorized party's access, took additional steps to enhance its safeguards, and reported the issue to law enforcement authorities.
SM Energy says its investigation determined on June 30, 2026 that an unauthorized third party had accessed certain systems and obtained files containing personal information. Notice letters were mailed to affected individuals on July 30, 2026, and the notice was filed with the California Attorney General. A parallel filing with Massachusetts regulators lists 71 individuals as affected. Unlike many breach notices, SM Energy's letter itemizes the categories of information involved, which varied by individual and included name, postal address, email address, phone number, and Social Security number or Taxpayer Identification Number. The company is offering 24 months of complimentary Experian IdentityWorks credit monitoring, which tracks Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion files, with enrollment required by October 31, 2026.
Because Social Security numbers and Taxpayer Identification Numbers can be used to open fraudulent accounts and file false tax returns, exposure of these identifiers carries a long-term risk that does not expire when a monitoring term ends. Because a Social Security number or Taxpayer Identification Number may be involved, also watch for IRS notices about returns you did not file, and consider requesting an IRS Identity Protection PIN.
