Background

What happened in the Sutherland data breach

Sutherland provides business process services to organizations in the healthcare industry. In a letter dated November 2, 2026, the company said it recently became aware of access to claims-related information by an unauthorized individual who acted on behalf of a Sutherland employee at various points in time between July 29, 2024 and July 10, 2026. According to the letter, the incident occurred in the course of claims processing Sutherland performed on behalf of the recipient's health insurance company. Sutherland says it terminated the employee's access rights, launched an investigation, and is cooperating with law enforcement.

After notifying the health insurance company about the unauthorized access, Sutherland says it worked with that company to determine the individuals and data involved, a determination that occurred on or about August 24, 2026. The letter says the records accessible to the unauthorized worker include name, address, gender, date of birth, health plan information and member ID, Social Security number, and health insurance claims data (such as healthcare providers, dates of service, and diagnosis, procedure, and treatment information), and that the records did not include any financial account numbers. The Massachusetts filing, which reports 6 Massachusetts residents, lists name, address, gender, date of birth, health plan information, Social Security number, health insurance claims data, healthcare providers, dates of service, diagnosis and procedure.

The letter says Sutherland has not uncovered any evidence or indication of actual or attempted misuse and that, by all appearances, the unauthorized worker was not engaged in malicious activity. Sutherland is offering IDX identity protection services, including credit and CyberScan monitoring, with an enrollment deadline of February 2, 2027. Whether Sutherland's safeguards over access to claims records met legal standards is among the issues being evaluated.

FAQ

Sutherland data breach FAQ

I received a data breach letter from Sutherland. What should I do? +

Keep the letter, enroll in the IDX identity protection services before the February 2, 2027 deadline and activate the included credit monitoring, review your account statements and credit reports, consider a fraud alert or credit freeze, and contact a data breach attorney for a free consultation. Accepting the IDX services does not waive your right to pursue a claim.

Is the Sutherland data breach letter real or a scam? +

Sutherland has reported this incident to the Massachusetts Attorney General. Compare your letter to the official filing linked in Sources below, and use only the enrollment website and phone number printed in your letter. Be cautious of unexpected calls, texts or emails about the breach that ask for your Social Security number or account login. If you are unsure, send your letter to Dapeer Law for a free review.

Why did I get a Sutherland letter if I never used Sutherland? +

Sutherland says the incident occurred in the course of claims processing it performed on behalf of your health insurance company. Its letter says the information involved was contained in records accessible to the unauthorized worker in the performance of those services, so you may have received a letter from Sutherland even if you never dealt with it directly.

Am I eligible to join a class action against Sutherland? +

If you received a November 2026 breach notice from Sutherland about claims processing performed for your health insurance company, you are likely eligible for a free case evaluation. Eligibility depends on your state of residence, the categories of your data that were involved, and any losses you have suffered. Dapeer Law will review your notice at no cost.

How much money could I receive from a class action lawsuit? +

Data breach class action recoveries vary significantly. Settlements typically range from a few hundred dollars for basic out-of-pocket losses to several thousand dollars for documented identity theft, with class size, damages, and negotiation all affecting the final amount. No payout is guaranteed, and this investigation has not yet resulted in a settlement.

What personal information was exposed in the breach? +

Sutherland's letter says the records accessible to the unauthorized worker include your name, address, gender, date of birth, health plan information and member ID, Social Security number, and health insurance claims data (such as healthcare providers, dates of service, and diagnosis, procedure, and treatment information). The letter says the records did not include any financial account numbers. The Massachusetts filing lists the same categories. Sutherland says it has not uncovered any evidence or indication of actual or attempted misuse.

Did Sutherland offer free credit monitoring? +

Yes. The Massachusetts letter offers IDX identity protection services, including credit and CyberScan monitoring, a $1,000,000 insurance reimbursement policy, and fully managed identity theft recovery services. The letter does not state how long the services last. Enroll by February 2, 2027 using the enrollment code at the top of your letter, and activate the credit monitoring, which the letter says must be activated to be effective. Enrollment does not waive your right to pursue a claim.
