What happened
Upstaging, Inc. ("Upstaging"), a Sycamore, Illinois live-event production company, notified the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General on August 5, 2026 that an unauthorized party gained access to certain company systems. According to the filing, the incident involved the personal information of four Massachusetts residents. Upstaging mailed notice letters to affected individuals the same day.
The reported category of personal information involved is Social Security numbers. Upstaging is offering 24 months of complimentary Single Bureau Credit Monitoring, Credit Report, and Credit Score services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company, along with proactive fraud assistance and remediation support. Recipients have 90 days from the date of their letter to enroll. The public filing does not state when the unauthorized access began, when it was discovered, or how the intrusion occurred.
Social Security numbers are among the most sensitive categories of personal data because they cannot be changed and can be used to open fraudulent credit accounts, file false tax returns, and commit other forms of identity theft for years after a breach. Whether Upstaging maintained reasonable data security practices, how the intrusion occurred, how long attackers had access, and how many people were affected nationwide are among the questions being evaluated.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter contains the enrollment code for credit monitoring and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Enroll in the free 24-month credit monitoring
Enroll in the Cyberscout monitoring offered in your letter within 90 days of the letter date. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because Social Security numbers were reported as involved, also watch for unfamiliar tax filings, new credit inquiries, and unexpected government benefit notices.
