What happened
According to a notice Tombigbee Healthcare Authority dba Whitfield Regional Hospital filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General, unauthorized actors accessed the hospital's network between May 15 and June 8, 2025. Whitfield Regional Hospital reports that it detected and contained the intrusion on June 8, 2025, secured the affected network environment, notified law enforcement, and engaged external cybersecurity experts to conduct a thorough investigation.
Whitfield Regional Hospital reports that its investigation confirmed on June 26, 2026 that specific files involved in the incident contained patient data, and it began mailing written notices to affected individuals and reported the matter to the Massachusetts Attorney General on July 17, 2026. The notice indicates that the affected files contained Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and medical information. The hospital is offering affected individuals 12 months of complimentary Experian IdentityWorks credit-monitoring and identity-protection services. The gap between the June 2025 intrusion and the July 2026 notices, roughly 13 months, is one of the questions our investigation is examining.
