What happened
On May 15, 2026, AssetMark, Inc., a Concord, California based wealth management platform serving financial advisors and their clients, identified suspicious activity involving certain employee login credentials. The company's investigation determined that on the same day, an unauthorized user accessed AssetMark's environment and downloaded files containing customer information. According to the notice filed with the California Attorney General, the incident was isolated to AssetMark's systems and did not involve customers' financial advisors.
By May 18, 2026, AssetMark confirmed that some of the downloaded files contained personal information, including names and Social Security numbers. The company reported the incident to Texas regulators on June 18, 2026 and filed notice with the California Attorney General on June 26, 2026, roughly one month after discovery. AssetMark's Texas filing reported 29,802 individuals affected. Affected individuals are being offered 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection through Epiq Privacy Solutions ID.
Because Social Security numbers cannot be easily changed, their exposure creates a long-term risk of identity theft, fraudulent accounts, and tax fraud. Whether AssetMark's safeguards around employee credentials met legal standards is among the issues being evaluated.
