Background

What happened in the BBC data breach

According to a notice that BBC's counsel sent to the New Hampshire Attorney General, the company's servers experienced an interruption to its business on Sunday, August 23, 2026, and on August 24, 2026 the company took steps to recover its server and systems. On September 7, 2026, the company received a ransom note stating that an external threat actor had accessed the company's servers and possessed three internal files. Based on the investigation, BBC learned that the interruption had been caused by a ransomware incident and that three internal BBC files had been accessed by the threat actors. The company says it could not determine with certainty whether other files containing personal information were in fact accessed or exfiltrated.

The notice letters to individuals, dated October 6, 2026 and filed with the New Hampshire Attorney General and in Massachusetts, say the information that may have been accessed includes personnel files and employment related information. They say the personal information on BBC's system may include name, address, date of birth, social security number, passport number, driver's license number, other government identification numbers provided in connection with employment, financial account information for accounts used for direct deposit enrollment, health insurance information such as health insurance identification number, payroll information, and medical information provided in connection with a disability insurance application, accommodation request, or otherwise. The letters add that a spouse's or dependents' name, address and social security numbers may also have been compromised if they were provided to the company. The letters state that BBC has not identified any evidence that personal information was actually accessed or removed, but that there is a possibility it may have been compromised.

The Massachusetts filing lists credit/debit card numbers, driver's license numbers, financial account information, medical information, Social Security numbers, name, address, date of birth, health insurance identification number, other government identification numbers, passport number and payroll information, and reports 42 Massachusetts residents. The New Hampshire filing reports approximately four New Hampshire residents. The Vermont filing lists Social Security Numbers, Financial Account Codes and Credit and Debit Account Info, and the Vermont Attorney General reports 3 Vermonters affected. The New Hampshire filing also says the potentially affected information may relate to individuals of companies that submitted business-related credit applications with BBC. BBC is offering complimentary Experian IdentityWorks, for 24 months in the Massachusetts letter and 12 months in the New Hampshire letter.
