Background

What happened in the Hood River Dental data breach

Hood River Dental's attorneys sent a letter to the New Hampshire Attorney General. According to that letter, Hood River Dental, located at 1805 Belmont Ave in Hood River, Oregon, detected a network security incident on or about October 22, 2025. The notice letters say the company "experienced a cybersecurity incident that affected certain systems within our network environment." The letters also say the company contained the network and engaged third-party cybersecurity experts. On September 8, 2026, the investigation determined that certain files containing individuals' information may have been accessed by an unauthorized party. The letter filed in New Hampshire gives the access date as on or about October 22, 2025. The letter filed in Massachusetts gives it as on or about January 15, 2026.

The New Hampshire filing says protected health information may have been subject to unauthorized access and acquisition. For the one New Hampshire resident it covers, it lists the information as address, phone number, date of birth, provider name, patient ID number and dental insurance benefit plan name. The Massachusetts filing lists medical information. In the posted copies of the consumer letter, the "What Information Was Involved" section is blank or blacked out, so check your own letter. The New Hampshire filing says notification began on or about October 8, 2026, nearly a year after the incident was detected. The Oregon Department of Justice lists 16,609 people affected and does not say whether that figure is Oregon residents or a total.

The letters describe fraud alert, security freeze and free credit report steps. They also say the company has reset passwords and enabled multi-factor authentication for all users. They do not describe a credit monitoring offer. Among the issues being evaluated are whether Hood River Dental's security practices before the incident met legal standards, and whether the time between detection and notice caused additional harm.
