What happened
On May 20, 2026, Beusa Energy, LLC ("Beusa Energy"), a privately held oil and gas exploration and production company headquartered in The Woodlands, Texas, determined that an unauthorized party had accessed its computer network. A forensic investigation conducted with outside cybersecurity professionals found that between July 24 and July 30, 2025, files containing personal information may have been accessed or copied.
Beusa Energy began mailing notification letters on June 10, 2026. Unlike many breach notices, the company's letter itemizes the categories of information potentially involved, which may include full name and address, date of birth, Social Security number, driver's license or state ID number, government-issued ID details such as passport information, financial account and payment card numbers, and health insurance and medical information. Beusa Energy is offering complimentary identity-protection and credit-monitoring services through Epiq Privacy Solutions ID. The company reported the incident to regulators with 4,161 individuals affected.
The intrusion is reported to have occurred in late July 2025 but was not detected until May 2026, leaving personal data potentially exposed for roughly ten months. Whether Beusa Energy's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, and whether the detection delay increased the risk of harm, are among the issues being evaluated.
