Background

What happened

On March 23, 2026, Carlysle Engineering, Inc. ("Carlysle Engineering"), a Boston, Massachusetts-based fire-protection systems contractor founded in 1946, detected a cyber-attack on its primary file server. The company's IT administrator engaged cybersecurity firm OCD Tech, LLC and specialized legal counsel the same day. According to the notice filed with the Maine Attorney General, OCD Tech's investigation confirmed the presence of a ransomware group, located a ransom note, and determined that some data had been exfiltrated before the intrusion was contained.

Carlysle Engineering completed its comprehensive file review on April 23, 2026 and began mailing notification letters on May 14, 2026, roughly seven weeks after the attack was detected. The forensic review found that the attacker accessed a segment of the network containing human-resources files, including W-2s and scanned driver's licenses. The data elements potentially involved include names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and driver's license or state-issued identification numbers. The company is offering 24 months of complimentary IDX identity-theft protection with credit and CyberScan monitoring, up to $1 million in identity-theft insurance, and fully managed ID recovery services, with an enrollment deadline of August 14, 2026.

Whether Carlysle Engineering's pre-breach security practices and access controls met legal and industry standards, why a fire-protection contractor's file server held unencrypted W-2s and scanned government identification documents in a manner accessible to a ransomware actor, and the total population of current and former employees and other individuals whose Social Security numbers were exfiltrated are among the issues being evaluated.

FAQ

Common questions

I received a data breach letter from Carlysle Engineering. What should I do? +

Keep your notification letter, enroll in the free 24-month IDX identity-theft protection and credit-monitoring service using the activation code printed in your letter before the August 14, 2026 deadline, place a fraud alert or security freeze with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, monitor your bank, credit-card, insurance, and tax accounts for unfamiliar activity, request your free annual credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com, and contact a data breach attorney for a free consultation. Because Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers are involved, identity-theft, tax-fraud, and synthetic-identity monitoring are particularly important. Accepting IDX services does not waive your right to sue.

Am I eligible to join a class action against Carlysle Engineering? +

If you received a May 2026 breach notice from Carlysle Engineering, you are likely eligible for a free case evaluation. Dapeer Law will review your notice at no cost.
