Background

What happened

According to a notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General on August 10, 2026, Citizens Bank reported that customer account information was accessed outside the scope of authorized business purposes and shared with a third party vendor between April 23, 2026 and May 15, 2026. The bank's notice describes an unauthorized internal access and disclosure of account data rather than an external ransomware or network intrusion event.

Citizens Bank states that the information involved included customer names, addresses, credit or debit card numbers, card expiration dates, and card security codes. The bank reports that it replaced cards associated with any fraudulent transactions and advised customers who had not received a replacement card by June 1, 2026 to contact the bank and request one. Citizens Bank is offering affected customers a complimentary two year membership in Equifax Credit Watch Gold, an identity theft credit monitoring service. The regulator filing was made on August 10, 2026, roughly three months after the reported access window closed.

A card number combined with an expiration date and a security code is the complete set of data needed to make card not present purchases online or by phone, which makes this category of exposure a direct fraud risk even where no Social Security number or online banking credential was involved. Dapeer Law is evaluating whether affected customers may have claims under Massachusetts and federal law, including claims arising from the length of time between the reported access and the notification.

What to do if you received a letter

1

Keep your notice letter

Do not discard it. Your letter contains the activation code for the complimentary credit monitoring and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.

2

Activate the free two year credit monitoring

Activate the Equifax Credit Watch Gold membership offered in your letter using the enclosed activation code before the stated deadline. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.

3

Place a fraud alert or credit freeze

Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide.

Because card numbers, expiration dates, and security codes were reported to be involved, also review your card statements line by line for the months following April 2026 and ask Citizens Bank to reissue any card you have not already had replaced.
