Background

What happened

On April 6, 2026, Cresset Capital Management, LLC ("Cresset Capital"), a Chicago, Illinois private wealth management firm founded in 2017 and headquartered at 444 West Lake Street, Suite 4700, identified suspicious activity within its computer network. According to the company's notice, Cresset activated its incident response protocols, contained the activity shortly afterward, and engaged third-party cybersecurity professionals to investigate and confirm that no ongoing unauthorized access remained.

Written consumer notices were mailed on May 14, 2026, roughly five weeks after the suspicious activity was detected, and the incident was reported to the California Attorney General the same day. Cresset Capital's notice states that the personal information accessed includes each affected individual's name, contact information, date of birth, Social Security number, driver's license number, passport number, and financial account information. Cresset reports no evidence that client assets, funds, or accounts were compromised, no operational disruption, and no indication that the data has been publicly released. Affected individuals are being offered a complimentary 24-month Experian IdentityWorks Credit Plus 3B subscription.

Because Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and passport numbers can be used to open fraudulent credit accounts, file false tax returns, obtain government identification, and commit other forms of identity theft, the combination of identifiers reportedly involved in this incident raises heightened concerns. Whether Cresset Capital's pre-breach security practices were reasonable for a private wealth management firm holding highly sensitive client information, and the scope of the affected individuals, are among the issues being evaluated.

What to do if you received a letter

1

Keep your notice letter

Do not discard it. Your letter contains the activation code for the complimentary Experian IdentityWorks Credit Plus 3B subscription and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.

2

Enroll in the free 24-month Experian IdentityWorks Credit Plus 3B subscription

Enroll in the Experian IdentityWorks Credit Plus 3B service offered in your letter by the enrollment deadline printed on your notice. The product includes three-bureau credit monitoring, internet/dark-web surveillance, identity restoration, and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.

3

Place a fraud alert or credit freeze

Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and passport numbers were reportedly involved, you should also place a fraud alert or security freeze on your credit file with all three major bureaus, watch for unfamiliar tax filings or unemployment claims under your Social Security number, monitor your bank and brokerage statements closely for unauthorized activity, and consider notifying your state's department of motor vehicles and the U.S. Department of State about the potential misuse of your driver's license and passport.
