What happened
According to the notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General, an unauthorized party accessed portions of Emanuel Medical Center's computer network between May 21 and May 24, 2025. The hospital, located in Swainsboro, Georgia, states it detected suspicious activity on May 22, 2025, secured its systems, and engaged third party cybersecurity specialists to investigate the incident and strengthen its defenses.
Emanuel Medical Center retained a data review firm to identify the files and individuals involved, then began mailing notification letters and filed its notice with the Massachusetts Attorney General on July 27, 2026. That is roughly 14 months after the activity was first detected, a notification delay well beyond the timeframes contemplated by several state breach notification statutes. The filing reports four affected Massachusetts residents; the nationwide total has not been publicly disclosed. Impacted patients are being offered a complimentary Experian IdentityWorks membership, with the activation code and enrollment deadline printed in the mailed notice.
The categories of information reported as present in the affected systems include Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and medical information. Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers are the data elements most often used to open fraudulent accounts, and medical information carries separate exposure to insurance and medical identity fraud.
