What happened
According to the notice Gem Prep Meridian North filed with the Idaho Attorney General, Instructure detected unauthorized access to its systems on April 29, 2026. The criminal threat actor had obtained access four days earlier, on April 25, 2026. Instructure immediately revoked the intruder's privileges and began investigating the scope of the intrusion. Instructure later informed Gem Prep Meridian North that the attacker viewed certain student and staff information stored in the Canvas Learning Management System the school uses for instruction and communication.
On May 8, 2026, Gem Prep Meridian North mailed notice letters to affected individuals, and on May 11, 2026 the school filed its consumer notice with the Idaho Attorney General, roughly nine days after Instructure's discovery of the incident. According to the school's notice, the categories of information that may have been viewed include student and staff names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and messages exchanged between Canvas users. The school states there is no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government-issued identifiers, or financial information were involved, and the notice does not announce any complimentary credit-monitoring or identity-protection service. Gem Prep Meridian North's IT Department says it has completed an internal review of privileged Canvas administrator accounts and is continuing to work with Instructure to understand the full scope of the exposure.
Although the disclosed data categories do not include Social Security numbers or financial account information, names combined with student IDs, school email addresses, and the contents of private Canvas messages can fuel highly targeted phishing and social-engineering campaigns. Notice recipients should remain alert to unsolicited messages referencing their Gem Prep Meridian North student record, Canvas login, school email, or any topics that previously appeared in their Canvas conversations.
