What happened
According to the notice Gem Prep Pocatello filed with the Idaho Attorney General, Instructure detected unauthorized activity in its systems on April 29, 2026. The criminal threat actor had obtained access four days earlier, on April 25, 2026, and access was terminated once it was identified. Gem Prep Pocatello learned of the potential impact to its community on May 2, 2026, when Instructure informed the school that the attacker had viewed certain student and staff information stored in the Canvas Learning Management System the school uses for instruction and communication.
On May 8, 2026, Gem Prep Pocatello mailed written notice letters to affected individuals, and the breach was reported to the Idaho Attorney General on May 11, 2026. According to the school's notice, the categories of information that may have been viewed include student and staff names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and messages exchanged between Canvas users. The notice does not announce any complimentary credit-monitoring or identity-protection service. Gem Prep Pocatello states that it has conducted an internal review of privileged Canvas administrator accounts and is continuing to work with Instructure to determine the full scope of the incident, while providing ongoing updates to students, families, and staff.
Although the disclosed data categories do not include Social Security numbers or financial account information, names combined with student IDs, school email addresses, and the contents of private Canvas messages can fuel highly targeted phishing and social-engineering campaigns.
