What happened
On January 7, 2026, Goodwin University, Inc. ("Goodwin University"), a Connecticut private nonprofit institution of higher education headquartered in East Hartford, identified a network disruption that revealed unauthorized access to certain files. With the assistance of outside cybersecurity specialists, the university confirmed that personal information stored on its systems may have been acquired by an unauthorized third party.
Goodwin University completed its detailed electronic review of the affected files on March 20, 2026 and began mailing notification letters to impacted individuals on or around April 16, 2026, more than three months after the breach was discovered. According to the notice filed with the Maine Attorney General on May 4, 2026, the data elements involved may include first and last name, Social Security number, driver license or state identification number, and personal health information. The university is offering 24 months of single-bureau credit monitoring, credit report, and credit score services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company.
Because the exposed categories include Social Security numbers and personal health information, notice recipients face heightened risks of identity theft, tax fraud, and medical identity fraud. Whether Goodwin University's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, and whether the notification delay caused additional harm, are among the issues being evaluated.
