What happened
According to a notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General on September 4, 2026, Hartmann Financial Advisors, LLC ("Hartmann Financial Advisors") detected suspicious activity within its network environment on or about June 1, 2026. The company states that it secured its systems, engaged outside forensic computer specialists, and began an investigation. That investigation determined that an unauthorized actor accessed portions of the network containing personal information. Hartmann Financial Advisors also reports that it contacted federal law enforcement about the incident.
Hartmann Financial Advisors completed its review to identify the affected individuals on or about August 13, 2026, and filed notice with the Massachusetts Attorney General on September 4, 2026. The filing identifies Social Security numbers and financial account information as the categories of data placed at risk, and lists 1 affected Massachusetts resident. The company is offering complimentary identity protection through Epiq Privacy Solutions ID, which includes three bureau credit monitoring, dark web monitoring, identity restoration, and up to $1 million in identity theft insurance with reimbursement for certain unauthorized electronic fund transfers. The duration of the monitoring is not stated in the copy of the notice posted by the regulator, and the total number of individuals affected across all states has not been publicly disclosed. Hartmann Financial Advisors states that it is not aware of any misuse of the information at this time.
Roughly three months passed between the date Hartmann Financial Advisors says it detected the intrusion and the date notice was filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General. Several state breach notification statutes require notice without unreasonable delay, and the length of a notification gap is one of the issues courts examine. Social Security numbers and financial account information are among the most sensitive categories of data in a breach, because they can be used to open credit, file fraudulent tax returns, and access existing accounts. Whether the company's pre-incident security practices met legal standards, and whether affected individuals face an ongoing risk, are among the issues being evaluated.
