Background

What happened in the Iowa Spring data breach

According to its notice letter, Iowa Spring became aware of suspicious activity affecting its systems on April 9, 2026. The company says it started an investigation with the assistance of outside professionals and contained its network. The investigation determined that an unauthorized third party accessed certain Iowa Spring systems between April 3, 2026, and April 11, 2026, and accessed or acquired certain files.

On September 10, 2026, Iowa Spring's review identified that the affected files contained personal information related to certain individuals. The notice letter is dated October 9, 2026, six months after the company became aware of the suspicious activity. The letter says the personal information in the files includes names and other categories, but the posted sample letter shows those other categories only as a placeholder. The Massachusetts filing lists Social Security numbers and reports 2 Massachusetts residents affected.

The Massachusetts letter offers complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services through Experian IdentityWorks, with an enrollment deadline of January 29, 2027. The posted sample letter does not show the length of the membership. Whether the company's security practices met legal standards, and whether the time between discovery and notice caused additional harm, are among the issues being evaluated.
