What happened
On April 29, 2026, Instructure Holdings, Inc., the vendor that operates the Canvas learning management system used by Lincoln Technical Institute ("Lincoln Tech"), detected unauthorized activity within its platform. Although the initial access was revoked, Instructure identified additional related activity on May 7, 2026. Instructure has said it contained the incident and alerted its approximately 9,000 education-sector customers, including Lincoln Tech.
After receiving notice from Instructure, Lincoln Tech conducted its own investigation and confirmed that Canvas systems containing student and staff information were involved. Lincoln Tech began notifying potentially affected individuals on July 1, 2026, more than two months after the activity was first detected. According to the information Instructure shared, the data that may have been accessible includes names, email addresses, student ID numbers, course names, enrollment information, and direct messages exchanged within Canvas. Instructure has reported no indication that passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers, core course content, or financial information were involved.
Neither company has said it found evidence that the data has been misused. Even so, exposed names, email addresses, and student identifiers can be used for targeted phishing and account-takeover attempts. Whether the organizations' data security and vendor oversight practices met legal standards, and whether the notification timing created additional risk, are among the issues being evaluated.
