What happened
According to a breach notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Revenue ("DOR") determined that an unauthorized party had accessed personal information. The notice does not specify the date the access occurred. DOR reported the incident to state regulators on July 16, 2026 and notified the individual whose information was involved.
DOR's filing states that a Social Security number was exposed and reports one affected individual. The agency has stated it has no indication the data has been misused for fraud or identity theft. DOR is offering 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection through Experian IdentityWorks (Experian), with an activation code provided in the notification letter, and is instructing the affected person on how to place a free security freeze with each major credit bureau.
