What happened
On June 3, 2026, MIV Buyer, LLC ("MIV Buyer") detected suspicious activity in a system associated with its brand Suede. The company says it took immediate containment steps and retained forensic investigators to assess the scope of the intrusion. That investigation determined that on June 3, 2026, an unauthorized third party accessed and potentially copied certain files containing personal information.
MIV Buyer completed its review of the affected data and its address verification on July 27, 2026, and began mailing notification letters on or around September 10, 2026, more than three months after the incident was discovered. The notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General reports that the involved data elements were names and Social Security numbers, and states that 20 Massachusetts residents were notified. MIV Buyer is offering 24 months of credit monitoring and identity theft protection through Cyberscout (TransUnion).
Social Security numbers do not expire and cannot be reissued on request, so an exposure of this kind carries a long tail of identity theft risk. Whether MIV Buyer's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, and whether the delay between discovery and notification caused additional harm, are among the issues being evaluated.
