What happened
On July 17, 2026, M&T Bank notified the Massachusetts Attorney General of a processing error that caused a check image related to one customer's account to be viewable to another bank customer. According to the notice, the exposure was the result of an internal processing error and was addressed as soon as it was identified.
The notice states that the information viewable included the affected customer's name and the bank account number displayed on the check image. M&T Bank reports that it removed the image immediately upon discovery and corrected the transaction to prevent further exposure. The filing indicates that one individual was affected, and it does not describe any complimentary credit monitoring or identity-protection services.
Even a limited exposure of a name paired with a bank account number can carry a risk of unauthorized transactions or attempted fraud. Notice recipients are encouraged to review their statements and online banking activity closely, report anything unfamiliar to the bank, and consider placing a free security freeze on their credit reports.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter documents that your account information was exposed and is important evidence if you decide to pursue a claim.
Place a free security freeze on your credit reports
M&T Bank's notice recommends placing a security freeze with all three major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Under federal law you cannot be charged to place, lift, or remove a freeze, and doing so does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because a bank account number was exposed, watch specifically for unfamiliar withdrawals, checks, or transfers, and report them to the bank promptly.
Speak with a data breach attorney
Consultations with Dapeer Law are free and confidential. We will review your notice, explain your options, and advise whether you may be eligible to pursue a claim. Because the bank reported that only one individual was affected, any claim may proceed on an individual basis rather than as a class action.
