Dapeer Law, P.A. is investigating a potential class action against MutualOne Bank (also written as Mutual One Bank), a Massachusetts mutual savings bank headquartered in Framingham, on behalf of customers whose debit card information may have been compromised in the incident reported to state regulators in July 2026.

What happened
According to a notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General on July 30, 2026, MutualOne Bank discovered fraudulent debit card activity on customer accounts. An internal investigation confirmed that an unauthorized party had obtained customer card data and used it to initiate illegitimate transactions. The bank reported that four Massachusetts customers were affected.
MutualOne Bank states that the information involved was limited to credit and debit card numbers. The notice does not identify the date the fraudulent activity was discovered, the point at which the card data was obtained, or the date customer letters were mailed. In response, the bank issued replacement debit cards with new numbers at no cost, credited affected accounts for fraudulent transactions, and says it continues to monitor accounts through its Client Services team. The bank did not offer complimentary credit monitoring. It instead advised customers to review their monthly statements for the next 12 to 24 months, place a 90-day fraud alert with Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion, order a free report at AnnualCreditReport.com, and consider a security freeze.
Because the cause of the card compromise is not described in the public filing, whether the card data was obtained from the bank's own systems or from a third party remains under review. Dapeer Law is evaluating whether MutualOne Bank maintained reasonable safeguards for customer payment card data and whether affected customers received timely notice under Massachusetts law.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter documents that your card was involved and is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Place a fraud alert or security freeze
Because MutualOne Bank did not offer credit monitoring, consider placing a free 90-day fraud alert or a security freeze with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Massachusetts residents may place or lift a security freeze free of charge. Taking this step does not waive your right to pursue legal action.
Place a fraud alert or credit freeze
Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. To report suspicious activity or ask about a replacement card, call MutualOne Bank Client Services at (508) 820-4000. If you find a fraudulent charge, file a police report and keep a copy for your records, and review the Federal Trade Commission's identity theft resources at IdentityTheft.gov or call 1-877-ID-THEFT.
