What happened
On March 24, 2026, New Congol LLC dba New Congoleum ("New Congoleum"), a Trenton, New Jersey-based flooring manufacturer that has operated since 1886 and is part of the Beaulieu International Group, identified unusual activity within its computer network. The company immediately initiated an investigation and engaged independent cybersecurity experts to secure the environment and determine the scope of the incident. The investigation concluded that personal information may have been accessed during the incident.
New Congoleum began mailing notification letters on May 8, 2026, roughly six weeks after the suspicious activity was first detected. According to the notice filed with the Maine Attorney General, the data elements involved include names and Social Security numbers. The company is providing complimentary identity-theft protection and credit-monitoring services through IDX, including up to $1 million in identity-theft insurance and fully managed recovery assistance, with an enrollment deadline of August 8, 2026.
Whether New Congoleum's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, why a manufacturer's network held unencrypted Social Security numbers in a manner accessible to an outside actor, and the total population of individuals whose Social Security numbers were exposed are among the issues being evaluated.

Common questions
I received a data breach letter from New Congoleum. What should I do? +
Keep your notification letter, enroll in the free IDX identity-theft protection and credit-monitoring service using the activation code printed in your letter before the August 8, 2026 deadline, place a fraud alert or security freeze with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, monitor your bank, credit-card, and tax accounts for unfamiliar activity, request your free annual credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com, and contact a data breach attorney for a free consultation. Because Social Security numbers are involved, identity-theft and tax-fraud monitoring are particularly important. Accepting IDX services does not waive your right to sue.
Am I eligible to join a class action against New Congoleum? +
If you received a May 2026 breach notice from New Congoleum, you are likely eligible for a free case evaluation. Eligibility depends on your state of residence, the categories of your data that were exposed (including whether your Social Security number was involved), and any losses you have suffered. Dapeer Law will review your notice at no cost.
How much money could I receive from a class action lawsuit? +
Data breach class action recoveries vary significantly. Settlements typically range from a few hundred dollars for basic out-of-pocket losses to several thousand dollars for documented identity theft, with class size, damages, and negotiation all affecting the final amount. No payout is guaranteed, and this investigation has not yet resulted in a settlement.
What personal information was exposed in the breach? +
The breach notice filed with the Maine Attorney General confirms that the data elements involved include names and Social Security numbers. Your individual notification letter should specify the categories of your information that were involved, and we encourage you to review it closely. Because Social Security numbers are highly sensitive identifiers, exposure can carry meaningful identity-theft and tax-fraud risk.
Did New Congoleum offer free credit monitoring? +
Yes. New Congoleum is providing complimentary identity-theft protection and credit-monitoring services through IDX, including up to $1 million in identity-theft insurance and fully managed recovery assistance. The enrollment deadline is August 8, 2026, and activation is required by the recipient using the instructions in the mailed letter. Enrollment is separate from, and does not waive, your right to pursue a claim.
How many people were affected by the New Congoleum breach? +
The total number of affected individuals has not been publicly disclosed in the Maine Attorney General filing. This page will be updated as additional information becomes available.
Is there a deadline to take legal action? +
Yes. Statutes of limitations for data breach claims vary by state and legal theory, typically ranging from one to six years. Waiting can permanently bar your claim. Contact us as soon as possible for a free evaluation.
