What happened
According to a notice filed with the California Attorney General, Aesto, LLC, a third-party vendor to Northern Inyo Healthcare District d/b/a Northern Inyo Hospital, identified a security incident on or about December 18, 2025 affecting part of its Amazon Web Services infrastructure. A forensic investigation, supported by outside cybersecurity professionals and a manual document review, later confirmed that between on or about December 2 and December 18, 2025, an unauthorized actor may have accessed or acquired a limited amount of protected health information stored on the Aesto network.
Aesto confirmed on May 26, 2026 that patient information was involved and informed Northern Inyo Hospital on July 10, 2026. The notice was filed with the California Attorney General on August 20, 2026, and letters were sent to affected patients. The notice states that full names were involved along with additional protected health information related to patient care, but it does not itemize those data elements, and it does not disclose how many people were affected. Roughly eight months passed between the security incident and patient notification, a delay we are evaluating as part of this investigation.
Because the information at issue is protected health information held on behalf of a hospital, the incident raises questions under HIPAA and California medical privacy law about the security controls Aesto had in place and the oversight Northern Inyo Hospital exercised over its vendor. Health information that reaches an unauthorized party can be used for medical identity theft, fraudulent billing, and targeted phishing, and it cannot be changed the way an account number can.
