What happened
Southern Illinois University reported a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to files stored within its Oracle E-Business Suite environment. A forensic investigation conducted with outside cybersecurity specialists determined that between July 10 and August 16, 2025, personal information held in that environment was accessible to an unknown actor. The University reports that it secured the affected systems, engaged external cybersecurity professionals, and conducted a manual review of the affected documents, which concluded on or about July 24, 2026.
The University began mailing individual notification letters on August 20, 2026, roughly twelve months after the unauthorized access ended, and filed notice with the California Attorney General on August 20, 2026 and the Texas Attorney General on August 21, 2026. The Texas filing lists 1,597 affected individuals, and no separate counts have been published for other states. The data elements reported across the state notifications include full name, Social Security number, and physical address. Southern Illinois University is offering complimentary credit and identity-theft monitoring services to those who received notice. The provider and the length of that offering, and whether additional data elements were involved for particular individuals, are among the items still being confirmed.
