What happened
On March 12, 2026, Othon, Inc. ("Othon"), a Houston, Texas-based civil engineering firm founded in 1996, detected suspicious activity within its computer network. An immediate investigation determined that an unauthorized actor had accessed and downloaded certain files between March 11 and March 12, 2026. According to the notice filed with the Maine Attorney General, Othon isolated the affected systems, reported the incident to federal law enforcement, and began a detailed review of the files involved.
Othon completed its review in late May 2026 and began mailing notification letters on June 4, 2026, roughly twelve weeks after the intrusion was detected. The company reports that the files may have contained personal information that employees provided during the course of their employment, but the public filing did not itemize the specific data elements involved. Othon is offering affected employees 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity-theft protection through Epiq, with activation instructions included in the mailed notice.
Whether Othon's pre-breach security practices and access controls met legal and industry standards, what specific categories of employee information were accessed and downloaded, the total number of current and former employees affected, and the reasons for the roughly twelve-week gap between discovery and notification are among the issues being evaluated.
