Background

What happened

On January 3, 2026, Pennyroyal Healthcare Services d/b/a Community Medical Clinic identified unexpected activity on its computer network. An investigation conducted with outside cybersecurity experts determined that on or around January 2, 2026, an unauthorized actor may have acquired certain files containing personal information.

Pennyroyal Healthcare Services completed its review of the affected files on July 17, 2026 and began mailing notification letters on or around July 22, 2026, more than six months after the incident was discovered. The company reported the incident to the Massachusetts Attorney General on July 25, 2026, listing 5 Massachusetts residents among those affected. The public filing states that names were involved, along with additional data elements described in individual letters, but does not confirm whether Social Security numbers, financial account details, or medical information were exposed.

Because the company handles patient records on behalf of insurance carriers, the files at issue may include sensitive health and identifying information. Whether the company's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, and whether the notification delay caused additional harm, are among the issues being evaluated.
