Background

What happened

On December 16, 2025, QualiChem Inc. ("QualiChem"), a Virginia-based specialty chemicals manufacturer headquartered in Salem, Virginia, detected unauthorized activity on its computer network. The company immediately secured its systems, engaged third-party forensic specialists, and notified law enforcement. The investigation determined that an unauthorized party had accessed certain QualiChem servers between October 23 and December 16, 2025, and obtained copies of files stored there.

After analyzing the affected files, QualiChem concluded on April 16, 2026 that they contained personal information relating to specific individuals, and the company began mailing notification letters on April 29, 2026, more than four months after the breach was discovered. The public notice does not itemize the specific categories of data involved, stating only that affected files contained an individual's name in combination with additional personal information. QualiChem is offering complimentary identity-monitoring services through Kroll, including credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity-theft restoration.

Whether QualiChem's pre-breach security practices met legal standards, and whether the multi-month notification delay caused additional harm to affected individuals, are among the issues being evaluated.

FAQ

Common questions

I received a data breach letter from QualiChem. What should I do? +

Keep the letter, enroll in the free Kroll identity-monitoring services before the activation deadline printed in your notice, review your bank and credit-card statements for unfamiliar charges, place a fraud alert or security freeze on your credit file, and contact a data breach attorney for a free consultation. Accepting Kroll monitoring does not waive your right to sue.

Am I eligible to join a class action against QualiChem? +

If you received an April 2026 breach notice from QualiChem, you are likely eligible for a free case evaluation. Eligibility depends on your state of residence, the categories of your data that were exposed, and any losses you have suffered. Dapeer Law will review your notice at no cost.

How much money could I receive from a class action lawsuit? +

Data breach class action recoveries vary significantly. Settlements typically range from a few hundred dollars for basic out-of-pocket losses to several thousand dollars for documented identity theft, with class size, damages, and negotiation all affecting the final amount. No payout is guaranteed, and this investigation has not yet resulted in a settlement.

What personal information was exposed in the breach? +

QualiChem's public notice states only that affected files contained an individual's name in combination with additional personal information, without itemizing the specific categories. Because QualiChem handles employee, customer, and vendor data in the course of operating a specialty chemicals manufacturing business, the exposed data may include some combination of names, addresses, dates of birth, government identifiers, financial account information, or other personal details. Your individual notice letter should specify the categories of your data that were involved.

Did QualiChem offer free credit monitoring? +

Yes. QualiChem is providing complimentary identity-monitoring services through Kroll, including credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity-theft restoration. The duration of the services is stated in the notification letter you received. Enroll before the activation deadline printed in your letter. Enrollment is separate from, and does not waive, your right to pursue a claim.

How many people were affected by the QualiChem breach? +

The total number of affected individuals has not been publicly disclosed in the Maine Attorney General filing. This page will be updated as additional information becomes available.

Is there a deadline to take legal action? +

Yes. Statutes of limitations for data breach claims vary by state and legal theory, typically ranging from one to six years. Waiting can permanently bar your claim. Contact us as soon as possible for a free evaluation.
