What happened
According to the notice Seyfarth Shaw LLP ("Seyfarth") filed with the California Attorney General, on August 18, 2026 the firm identified the unauthorized acquisition of a limited number of documents containing personal information. The documents were sent by email to an unauthorized recipient. Seyfarth states that its investigation found no evidence that its broader network was compromised.
Seyfarth began mailing notification letters on or around September 18, 2026. The notice states that the affected documents contained individuals' names and Social Security numbers. Seyfarth is offering 24 months of complimentary single-bureau credit monitoring, credit reports, credit scores, and fraud assistance through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. The total number of affected individuals has not been publicly disclosed.
The sample letters indicate Seyfarth obtained this information while performing legal services for clients, including in its representation of AAA Mountain West Group and in connection with a class action settlement. People whose Social Security numbers are held by a law firm often have no direct relationship with that firm. Whether Seyfarth's safeguards for sensitive client and third-party data, including controls on outbound email, met legal standards is among the issues being evaluated.
