What happened
According to a notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General, Steel Fab Enterprises reported that an unauthorized party accessed its computer network between January 31, 2026 and February 28, 2026. The company says it immediately began working with outside cybersecurity professionals to analyze and contain the intrusion.
Steel Fab Enterprises states that its internal and third-party cyber forensics investigation concluded on July 15, 2026, and that the investigation determined full names and Social Security numbers were removed from the company's network. The company notified the Massachusetts Attorney General on August 14, 2026 and is offering affected individuals a complimentary Equifax® Credit Watch™ Gold membership, which the notice states is optional and will not affect credit scores. Roughly six months passed between the end of the reported access window and the mailing of notices, a delay that is relevant under several state data breach notification statutes and is part of what this investigation is evaluating.
A Social Security number cannot be changed the way a credit card number can, so exposure of that data element carries a long-term risk of identity theft, fraudulent credit applications, and tax or employment fraud. Fabrication and construction contractors typically hold complete payroll and onboarding records for current and former workers, which can combine identity, wage, and tax information in a single file set.

Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion to place a fraud alert or freeze on your file. Request a free weekly credit report from AnnualCreditReport.com, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery guide. Because a Social Security number was reported to be involved, also watch for credit applications you did not submit, unfamiliar accounts on your credit report, and IRS or state notices about wages or tax returns you do not recognize.
