What happened
Punch & Associates Investment Management, Inc. identified suspicious activity on its network on or about April 3, 2026. According to the notice the company filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General, a forensic investigation determined that an unauthorized actor accessed its systems between April 2 and April 3, 2026 and obtained certain files containing personal information. The company reported that 11 Massachusetts residents were affected. Notice letters were dated August 24, 2026, roughly five months after the suspicious activity was first identified.
The company states that the information involved was limited to first and last name, and that it has no evidence of misuse related to the incident. Punch & Associates says it secured the affected systems, engaged outside cybersecurity specialists, implemented additional security measures, and completed a review to identify the individuals whose information was present in the accessed files. It is offering 12 months of complimentary single-bureau credit monitoring, credit report, and credit score services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company, with enrollment open for 90 days from the date of the letter.
Punch & Associates is a registered investment adviser, and firms in this sector routinely hold client identifiers, account information, and tax data alongside basic contact details. The investigation is examining whether the categories of information involved were broader than the public filing describes, whether the firm employed reasonable security measures before the intrusion, and whether the roughly five-month gap between discovery and notice complied with state breach notification requirements.
What to do if you received a letter
Keep your notice letter
Do not discard it. Your letter contains the enrollment code for the free credit monitoring and documents that your information was involved, which is important evidence if you decide to participate in a lawsuit.
Enroll in the free 12-month credit monitoring
Enroll in the Cyberscout (TransUnion) single-bureau monitoring, report, and score service offered in your letter. Enrollment closes 90 days from the date of the letter. Accepting this benefit does not waive your right to pursue legal action.

Common questions
I received a data breach letter from Punch & Associates. What should I do? +
Keep the breach notice for your records. Enroll in the free 12-month Cyberscout (TransUnion) credit monitoring using the code in your letter before the 90-day enrollment window closes, review your credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com for unfamiliar activity, and consider placing a fraud alert or security freeze with the nationwide credit bureaus. Save any related correspondence, and speak with a data breach attorney about your legal rights.
Am I eligible to join a class action against Punch & Associates? +
You are generally eligible to be evaluated if you received a breach notification from Punch & Associates dated on or around August 24, 2026. Factors that can affect a claim include your state of residence, which categories of your data were exposed, and any documented losses or out-of-pocket expenses. A consumer-protection attorney can confirm your standing at no cost.
How much money could I receive from a class action lawsuit? +
Data breach class action recoveries vary significantly. Settlements typically range from a few hundred dollars for basic out-of-pocket losses to several thousand dollars for documented identity theft, with class size, damages, and negotiation all affecting the final amount. No payout is guaranteed, and this investigation has not yet resulted in a settlement.
What personal information was exposed in the breach? +
The notice filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General identifies first and last name as the information involved. Because the accessed files sat inside an investment management firm's network, the investigation is looking at whether additional categories of information were present. Check your individual letter, which lists the data elements that apply to you.
Did Punch & Associates offer free credit monitoring? +
Yes. Punch & Associates is offering 12 months of complimentary single-bureau credit monitoring, credit report, and credit score services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. Enrollment is open for 90 days from the date of your letter, and the activation code is included in the notice. Enrolling does not waive your right to pursue a claim.
How many people were affected by the Punch & Associates breach? +
The company reported 11 affected Massachusetts residents in its filing with the Massachusetts Attorney General. A nationwide total has not been publicly disclosed. This page will be updated as more information becomes available.
Is there a deadline to take legal action? +
Yes. Statutes of limitations for data breach claims vary by state and legal theory, typically ranging from one to six years. Waiting can permanently bar your claim. Contact us as soon as possible for a free evaluation.
How do I get a copy of the official breach notice? +
The notice was filed with the Massachusetts Attorney General's office and can be downloaded from the mass.gov data breach notification listing. Dapeer Law can also help you obtain a copy during a free consultation.
